Musée des nourrices et des enfants de l’Assistance publique

The Musée des Nourrices et des Enfants de l’Assistance publique in Alligny-en-Morvan explores a remarkable history that has strongly shaped the identity of the Morvan. From the late 18th century onwards, thousands of children in the care of the French public welfare service were placed with families in the region. At the same time, women from the Morvan left for the cities to work as wet nurses for other families’ children. Designed like a small village, the museum’s lively exhibition combines historical information, objects and personal testimonies. It gives a voice and a face to the children, wet nurses and foster families behind this often moving history.
