Église Collégiale Saint-Lazare

The Collégiale Saint-Lazare is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture in Burgundy. Construction began in the 11th century, and a relic of Saint Lazarus attracted many pilgrims travelling towards Santiago de Compostela. Its richly decorated 12th-century portals are particularly impressive. Twisted columns, sculpted capitals and decorations depicting plants, figures and fantastical creatures demonstrate the craftsmanship of medieval sculptors. Inside, seventeen steps lead down to the choir, which lies 2.5 metres below the entrance. Look out for the painted chapel and the monumental 19th-century organ. The church has been protected as a historic monument since 1840.
