About this place
The Tour de l’Horloge is one of Avallon’s best-known landmarks. The 49-metre-high tower was built in 1456, after the town’s fortifications had been badly damaged during the Hundred Years’ War. From this watchtower, a guard kept watch day and night, warning the inhabitants of approaching danger. A clock and a slate-covered bell tower were added later. Walk beneath its monumental gateway and explore Avallon’s historic centre, with its old streets, shops and the nearby Collégiale Saint-Lazare. The Tour de l’Horloge has been protected as a historic monument since 1930.
