Cathédrale Saint-Etienne

Cathédrale Saint-Étienne is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in the historic centre of Auxerre. Construction of the present cathedral began in the 13th century on the remains of an earlier Romanesque church. Its monumental façade features numerous sculptures, while its asymmetrical appearance is created by having only one completed tower. Inside, highlights include the elegant choir and colourful stained-glass windows dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Beneath the choir lies an 11th-century Romanesque crypt containing a rare medieval wall painting of Christ on horseback. The cathedral’s treasury can also be visited.
