Le Poirier au Loup in central Avallon is an unusual combination of an intimate restaurant, tearoom, meeting place and second-hand bookshop. Rather than choosing from an extensive à-la-carte menu, guests share a fixed menu at a communal table. The cooking focuses as much as possible on local ingredients, often organic, ethically sourced or fair trade. When arranged in advance, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and pork-free alternatives may be possible.
Thousands of previously read books fill the shelves, organised by genre and author. Visitors are welcome to browse and read a book before deciding whether to buy it. In suitable weather, lunch may also be served in the small courtyard, where guests can sometimes remain afterwards with a cup of tea.
Le Poirier au Loup does not have fixed opening days and the restaurant may close for extended periods. Always consult the current calendar on the website and preferably contact the owner before visiting or making a reservation.
